The
Carnival or “Entroido”, is a time for party, fun and liberation.
We celebrate the end of winter to leave way to the good weather. In Ares,
the Carnival is celebrated mostly on Sunday and on Wednesday, (local holiday).
On Sunday there are parades, “comparsas” (costumed groups),
and an all-ages costume contest.
Wednesday is the day of the “Entroidos”, thematic floats that
after parading all over the town, and participating in the contest to “the
Best Entroido”, are burned on the beach at the end of the day, accompanied
by the crowd and the fireworks. Of course not to mention the hot chocolate
and the “orejas” (literally ears, sweet fried pastries shaped
like pig´s ears) typical of these dates and free to sample to anyone
who wants to.
